In the Region of the Major Highlands of Abruzzo
In the Region of the Major Highlands, from the Five Miles Plan and for the Quarto del Barone and the Oriented Nature Reserve of the Quarto di Santa Chiara. An environment of charm, different, an area consisting of ancient lake beds, surrounded by high mountain ranges; a natural corridor between the Abruzzo National Park and the Majella National Park. The Abruzzo mountain shows its variety. A superb nature, a wide and bright landscape distinguish this stretch of Abruzzo. Historically famous, the Piano delle Cinque Miglia and the "Quarti" represent one of the most complex karst plateaus of the Apennines. The road that runs through the Cinque Miglia plateau is one of the most beautiful in Abruzzo. A green and uncontaminated landscape where there are the stazzi, the fountains and the pastures of that thriving past of transhumance. At an altitude of about 1,250 meters, today the area is an important ski area with the slopes of Roccarso-Aremogna. The period of greatest botanical and faunistic interest is spring for the myriad of blooms and for the sighting of birdlife. In winter they turn into snow-white tundras where wild animals often leave their footprints. The route includes a visit to the highland villages considered among the most beautiful in Italy. Pescocostanzo is a beautiful village whose churches are rich in works of art, also known for the handicraft of the tombolo, wrought iron, stone and goldsmith of great quality. Nearby is the Hermitage of S. Michele and the Bosco di Sant'Antonio, one of the most beautiful beech woods of Abruzzo and anciently considered sacred, Rivisondoli, famous for the living nativity scene, and Roccaraso important central Appenino ski resort.
